Search using Words
Note: The Words index does not contain data on titles that have been moved to the back catalog.
To search the catalog using keywords, select Words from the Search drop-down list. This search function uses specific search language and is not case-sensitive. The fields that are searched in a Words search are configured in the Wise configuration manager. For more information, see Categories - In word group.
Note: Since all Wise clients have switched to SOLR search, the 'Index' button is still visible but no longer has a function. When searching by words, you can still use multiple terms, wildcards, and stop words to further refine your results. See below for more information on refining your results using these methods.
Search syntax
You can use multiple terms in a Words search to refine your results.
Example: The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco
Term(S) | Function | Results |
---|---|---|
eco | keyword | Titles containing the word eco anywhere in the record. Results could include the title "Eco House", or the author Umberto Eco. |
eco rose | AND | Titles that contain the both word eco and rose anywhere in the record. The more terms entered, the more narrow the results. |
eco / rose | OR | Titles that contain eco OR rose anywhere in the record. The more terms entered, the broader the results. |
eco !rose | NOT |
Titles that contain eco but NOT rose somewhere in the record. Note: Do not use a space after the exclamation point (!). |
eco(2) | author search | Titles where the author's name contains eco. |
eco(2) rose(1) | author and title search | Titles where the author's name contains eco and the title contains rose. |
eco(2) / rose(1) | author OR title search | Titles where the author's name contains eco OR the title contains rose. The number of results will be greater than the previous search. |
eco umberto(2) | keyword and author | The word eco can appear anywhere in the record, but umberto will only appear in the author field. |
Wildcards
The Wise catalog recognizes the asterisk (*). This wildcard can be used to truncate terms and can be used before, between or after search terms.
Placement | Results |
---|---|
eco* | All words that begin with eco are searched: ecological, ecosystem, economics |
reali*e | When multiple spellings might be used for the same word: realize, realise |
*chai* | Returns words containing chai: Tchaikovsky, chairman |
Stop words
Stop words (also called Common word exclusions) are common words that the system ignores in some types of searches. Stop words are determined based on the number of times a term is indexed.
