Media Description Type (MDT)

The MDT (media description type) defines the different media types and icons for items.

Media description types (MDT), also referred to as media types, are a classification designation used within Wise. All titles within Wise have a media type associated with them. Media type is a broad designation that represents formats such as Book, DVD, Blu-ray, etc. Media types appear in the Wise OPAC as material type search facets within the search results screen. The MDT table also controls media type icons in the OPAC and staff client.

More granular classifications are defined as Material types, configured in the table (RMTSYS) RMT table definition. Media types are connected to the materials defined in this table.

A three-character code is used to represent media types. The code must be alphanumeric. To manage your media types in the Wise manager, click Titles and SCAT management > Titles > System tables > (MDT) Media type.

Caution: OCLC does not recommend removing media types without consultation. Contact OCLC Support for assistance.

New media types should be added when a new format will be used in your catalog. Adding a new media type will also create an additional search facet that is usable within the Wise OPAC. To add a new media type:
