Use title carousels in your web catalog

Learn how to highlight specific titles within your web catalog using carousels.

Carousels allow your library to highlight specific materials in your web catalog. The carousel might highlight newly acquired titles, themes, or special events at your library.

Overview

The following features are available in the carousel:

  • Retrieve item info
When using touch screens, customers can tap on a title cover to view availability. If your library leverages floor plans, the customer can also see where the title is located within the library.
  • Community
When Community is enabled at your library, the customer will also see ratings and reviews for a selected title.
  • Holds and wish list
Customers can place a hold or add a title to a wish list via the carousel.
  • Barcode scanner
If a barcode scanner is linked to a carousel screen in the library, customers can scan a title to view more information, including Community ratings and reviews.
  • Manage locally or centrally
Title sets in the carousel are controlled in the Wise configuration manager. Rules, shelves, and profiles must be created in order for the carousel feature to function properly. Titles can be selections from acquisitions profiles, Community lists, lists created using the clipboard in the staff client, or catalog selections created using Selections in the staff client. You can create a carousel to display items that were just returned to the library.

Each carousel list is associated with a profile in the Wise configuration manager that determines which shelves are displayed in the carousel. Linked information column shelves can be turned off and on. As a result, a list with a particular theme can be made available at the same time in all instances, or they can all be hidden.

Configure a carousel

Carousels are configured in the Wise configuration manager. To configure and add a carousel:

  1. Define your carousel rules. Carousel rules inform the system of which types of titles to include in your carousel planks.
  2. Create carousel planks for your carousel based on the carousel rules. Planks determine which items appear in a carousel.
  3. Create carousel profiles.
  4. Assign carousel profiles to Internet catalog ports or Pubcat ports. Profiles are linked to ports so that specific carousel items are displayed, depending on how and from where they are accessed. A profile can be connected to multiple ports.

Use your carousels

Add a carousel to your Wise site

Libraries using the native UI can only display a New arrivals carousel. To add this to your site, contact OCLC Support.

Add a carousel to your Joomla site

Carousels can be added to your Joomla site using an Infopoint Profile Number. To find a profile number in order to create a link:

  1. In the Wise manager, go to Carousel > Carousel profiles.
  2. Click Open to view the carousels configured for your library.
  3. Click Detail to view the details of the carousel you want to add to your website.
  4. Copy the unique key number that appears in the bottom of the window. Enter this unique key in Joomla as the Infopoint Profile Number to link to this profile.

Create a URL to access a carousel through a web browser

Note: For best results, use Chrome.

A URL can be created to access a carousel via a web browser:

Example:

../cg-bin/bx.pl?Vestnr=1710&var=kiosk&prt=IZL0000A
