Periodicals
Installation and implementation of periodicals
The following items must be configured in order to use the periodicals function in the Wise staff catalog:
- The system option BCABON must be enabled
- User accounts with access to periodicals must have the following roles enabled in Access codes and authorizations:
- Management of periodicals
- Journals management
- The system option ABONTZK should be enabled to allow title layout for Volume titles (using AMA as year for journals)
- Configure permissions for locations to receive and provide periodicals to one and other
- In the table (G_VST) Branch groups per branch, update the rule ABO - Magazine sub admin for to include all of the branches that will share subscription privileges
Periodicals system tables
The Periodicals system tables control settings related to periodicals subscriptions. These settings are defined in the Wise configuration manager at OCLC Wise > Periodicals.
(TABABS) Subscription types
A subscription type can be assigned to a subscription in order to group subscriptions for reports and summaries. The subscription type is also used to control the recall function when generating loan items. Your library can decide how to group subscriptions, one recommended use for this field is to indicate how often the subscription is received.
To create a subscription type:
- In the Wise configuration manager, go to OCLC Wise > Periodicals > (TABABS) Subscription types.
- Click New. The Subscription types window opens.
- Enter subscription type information:
Field Description Type Automatically filled by the system (ABS) Code 1 character code. Do not use 4 or 5, as those have default meanings in the system. Description Text description of the subscription type.
Example: Newspaper, 2 x per year, Irregular, etc.
Max. number of recalls (X means never) The maximum number of times the subscription can be recalled. Enter X for no maximum. Follow-up recall after xx days Number of days before the next recall will occur. - Click OK to save.
(TABABY) Subscription selection codes
A subscription selection code can be assigned to a subscription. The selection code provides additional information for selecting groups of subscriptions. This code and its description will appear on the receipt function of subscription items. This code can also be used to control the route and placement of subscriptions within the library.
To create a selection code:
- In the Wise configuration manager, go to OCLC Wise > Periodicals > (TABABY) Subscription selection codes.
- Click New. The Subscription selection codes window opens.
- Enter subscription selection information:
Field Description Type Automatically filled by the system (ABY). Code Unique alphanumeric code. Limit 4 characters. Description Text description of the selection. - Click OK to save.
(TABABA) Subscription action codes
A subscription action code can be assigned to a subscription. The action code serves to inform the system of what should happen to items over time. Examples of possible actions include:

In the Wise staff catalog, when an action code is assigned to a subscription, staff can also assign a time period. Based on the action code and period, notifications can be made for how the item should be handled.
To create an action code:
- In the Wise configuration manager, go to OCLC Wise > Periodicals > (TABABA) Subscription action codes.
- Click New. The Subscription action codes window opens.
- Enter subscription type information:

(TABFRE) Frequency - periodicals
Each periodical must be assigned a receipt frequency. This informs the system of when to expect the next issue to arrive.
To create a frequency:
- In the Wise configuration manager, go to OCLC Wise > Periodicals > (TABFRE) Frequency - periodicals.
- Click New. The Frequency - Periodical window opens.
- Enter frequency information:
Field Description Type Automatically filled by the system (FRE) Code Unique code, limit 3 characters. Description Text description of the frequency. Alert period in days An alert period can be specified to identify items not received. When filling this field, consider weekends and holidays. It is recommended to include a few days additional days per period to prevent putting items on the not received list before they arrive. Add to not received list By default, all items that are not received appear on an alert list if the alert period is exceeded. Enter an N, for No, if you do not want issues to be included on the list. This selection is recommended for items with daily, unknown, or irregular frequencies. Library use only (in days) If newly received items must be temporarily available for inspection, the period will be removed from this category. If no period is specified here, the default 7 days is used. - Click OK to save.
