Strange characters appear in records imported into Wise

Symptom

  • Strange, unexpected characters appear in place of the copyright symbol and others in MARC records imported into Wise

Applies to

  • Wise client
  • Connexion

Resolution

If the characters aren't carrying over correctly, check that the records you're importing are in UTF-8 Unicode format. In Connexion, this is in:

  1. From the Tools option in the menu bar at the top of the client, select Options > Export
  2. Click on the Record Characteristics button
  3. In the Character Set box, make sure that UTF-8 Unicode is selected
  4. Apply and Save the changes
  5. Export the record from Connexion to Wise again
