Configure boost factors for searching

Learn how to configure boost factors to provide better and more relevant search results.

Boost factor configuration

Boost factor configuration can be adjusted to impact search results for:

  • Position and exactness of field match
  • Popularity
  • Category

The following values can be boosted in the Wise Manager in Catalog > Catalog definitions > Search relevancy:

 Note: When a boost factor is changed the user will need to clear the manager cache before the changes are applied.

View boost factors

  1. Navigate to Catalog > Catalog Definitions > Search Relevancy in the Wise Manager.
  2. Click Open next to the Library Organization that you want to change a boost factor for.
  3. Click Open next to the boost factor category you wish to view.

 Note:  As of the 7.1.0 release of Wise the Audience category option is a placeholder for now. This functionality will be added in a future update.

  1.  Any boost factors currently applied will be listed with their assigned boost scores.

Add a new boost factor

  1. Navigate to Catalog > Catalog Definitions > Search Relevancy.
  2. Click Open next to the Library Organization that you want to change a boost factor for.
  3. Click Open next to the boost factor category you want to add a factor under.
  4. Click the New button on the top menu bar.
  5. On the pop-up screen, select the Option from the drop-down menu for the category.
  6. Assign the boost score you want to apply to the selected Option.
  7. Click Ok.

Change a boost score

To change a boost score:

  1. Click Open next to the Library Organization that you want to change a boost factor for.
  2. Click Detail next to the boost factor that you want to change.
  3. On the pop-up screen, select the Change radio button.
  4. Choose the desired boost score from the drop-down menu.
Boost score Description
Very High and High These scores will add a positive boost to titles belonging to the selected category.
Default This score behaves as if no boost has been applied. All categories not defined in this table will have a default boost.
Low and Very Low Titles with these boost scores will receive a negative boost compared to default, High or Very High boosts and may be pushed further down in the search results.

Use these carefully and only if you do not want certain category titles to appear at the top of the search results.
  1. Click Ok to save the change.

 Reset to boost factors to default

To reset boost factors to their default settings:

  1. Click Open next to the Library Organization that you want to reset boost factors for.
  2. To the right of each category is a Reset button. Click the button for the category you want to reset.
  3. To confirm the reset, click Ok on the confirmation dialog.

Remove a boost factor

To remove a configured boost factor:

  1. Click Open next to the Library Organization that you want to remove a boost factor from.
  2.  Click Detail next to the boost factor that you want to remove.
  3. On the pop-up screen, select the Remove radio button
  4. Click Ok to save the change.
  5. Click Ok on the confirmation dialog.
