Self-service design and logistics

Find information about logistical considerations related to library self-service.

How are items returned?

If your customers are able to check in returned items themselves via self-service, the return process must be clear. Use proper signage and storage for the materials. If the item is blocked, on hold, should be placed on transport or any other special handling is required, a message will appear on the self-service screen when the item is checked in. A special shelf should be designated for customers to place returned items that require special handling.

If customers cannot check in returned items on their own, your library can use a drop box for materials to be checked in by library staff.

Pick up holds

Hold request items that are ready to be picked up by a customer should be placed in a recognizable place, with clear signage. Hold items should contain an identification slip so that customers can find materials they have on hold.

Transport, blocked and hold materials

In most cases, customers will deposit materials that require special handling to a specified return location so that other customers cannot access them. Library staff will process the returned items and ensure that they are handled in the necessary manner. If customers are expected to handle their own return materials, the system can be configured so that a processing slip is printed upon return. Customers can be asked to place the slip in the item before returning. We recommend that you only ask customers to handle special items at smaller lending points, where items can be more carefully monitored.

Workstation equipment

If the self-check workstation is equipped with a touch screen, there is no need to configure other input methods, like a mouse or a keyboard. Library card numbers and item barcode numbers can be entered via the touch screen keyboard.

Peripherals

Peripherals determine how the self-service station works:

  • Is there a receipt printer?
  • How is a customer card read? Will the system use a barcode scanner or hand scanner?
  • How are items recognized? Will the system use an RFID plate, barcode scanner or hand scanner?

If your set up requires a receipt printer, barcode scanner, or if an RFID plate will be used, these components must also be able to connect to a standard Wise client. a touch screen can also be configured.

Define peripherals

Self-service peripherals are configured in the staff client. For more information, see Peripherals.

Screen size adjustments

Screens at a lower resolution (1024x768) become larger in height, but not in width. This means that the self-service screen can display 5 lines.
