Personal recommendations

Find information on personal recommendations and how those recommendations are generated.

The Personal recommendations page contains a list of recommended titles for users. The list of recommended titles contains a maximum of 50 titles, and the system generates a recommendation list based on:

  • Loan History: These are “similar” titles to ones that have been checked out previously.
  • Wish list: Not the wish list titles themselves, but titles that are similar to ones on the wish list.
  • Popularity: Titles must have been popular enough in the past year to be placed on a recommendation list. Very specific titles that are hardly ever borrowed will not be recommended.

 Note: The number of times an item must be checked out by different customers before it will be included as a recommendation is configured in the Manager. See Configure Settings for recommendations below for more information. 

The system leverages the wish list, but does not include those titles in the recommendations. Recently borrowed titles have a larger impact on recommendations than older titles. Recommendations are generated once a month based on media types.

Personal recommendations appear within the My account options. The customer has the option to place a hold on an item, or add the item to a wish list from the Personal recommendations screen.

As of 8.0.0 further recommendations can be obtained via Others also borrowed, see Others also borrowed  for more information.

Configure Personal recommendations

Add Recommendation media type conversion

  1. In the Manager, navigate to Wise > Catalog > Products > Recommendations > (TABRCM) Recommendation media type conversion. 
  2. Click New.
  3. The Recommendation media type conversion screen appears. Define the following fields:
    • Type - Defined as RCM by default
    • Code - Enter the MDT code for the MDT you wish to include. 
    • Description - Enter a description for the code
    • Search type - Enter the same MDT code used above
  4. Click OK. 
  5. Repeat steps 1-4 as needed to add additional MDT codes. 

Configure Settings for recommendations

  1. In the Manager, navigate to Wise > Catalog > Products > Recommendations > (RCO) Settings for Recommendation.
  2. Click the Open button next to the library organization this will be defined for. 
  3. Click Open next to any branch. (This setting is defined at the system level)
  4. Click the System tab.
  5. Click New. The Settings for Recommendations window appears.
  6. Define the following fields:
    • Type - Defined as RCO by default
    • Branch - Defined as 0000 by default. 
    • Code - Enter an MDT code that was configured in the (TABRCM) Recommendation media type conversion table. 
    • Description - Enter a description of the MDT code.
    • Select Fiction - Select Yes to include fiction material types in recommendations.
    • Select Non-Fiction - Select Yes to include non-fiction material types in recommendations.
    • Min. number of loans per title - Enter a numerical value defining the number of times and item must be checked out by different customers to be included in a recommendation. 
    • Do NOT include these material types - If there is an RMT associated with this MDT that should be excluded, enter it in this field. 
    • DO include these languages - Enter ENG
  7. Click OK. 
  8. Repeat steps 1-7 as needed. 

Complete My Menu configuration

  1. In the Manager, navigate to Wise > Products and Services > Memberships > Membership process > My Menu configuration. 
  2. Click Open next to the My menu configuration that Personal recommendations should be enabled under. 
  3. Click the Allowed to view personal recommendations checkbox.
  4. Click OK to save.
  5. Repeat steps 1-4 as needed for other My menu configurations.
